Getting to Know Minnie Ryder

DataWhat inspired you to start burlesque?

It was quite accidental actually. My best friend and I took an intro to pole dancing class. As we were bemoaning our sore thighs and watched bruises begin to form I saw information for a burlesque class. A few weeks later Angel Burlesque had a Burlesque 101 and I was hooked immediately.

How did you come up with your first routine?

I love the Blues Brothers and my favorite part was the scene with Cab Calloway singing “Minnie The Moocher”.

How long have you been doing burlesque?

I debuted my first routine February 2013 at Angel Burlesque Open Bra. It's amazing how time flies.

How have you changed, onstage and backstage in that time?

I've changed pretty much everywhere; one time squished in a corner covered with a curtain and 3 other ladies. it was a lot of fun....oh the question is how! I have confidence in abundance onstage and feel very much at home there. If something goes awry during a performance I don't sweat it, just improv through it and more often than not everything turns out grand. Backstage I'm not afraid to approach people and introduce myself, smile broadly and chit-chat whereas at the very beginning I'd be avoiding eye contact and looking for a hole to crawl into to be noticed less. Funny how the stage changes people isn't it?

What tips can you give aspiring performers?

Do not be afraid to fail. Do not be afraid to ask questions and ask for help.

Most Importantly: Confidence is the best thing to bring onstage with you...besides pasties.

A lot of the performers are often asked, what does your husband/boyfriend/girlfriend/etc think about this?  What does your hubby think of this?

At first he was like “Burlesque?”. Then he was like “um. Ok..” and now he's like “we need more babysitters so I can come see more of the shows because they are awesome and I totally support you doing things you love. And p.s. You're hot.” Ok so maybe he didn't say the p.s. part when we've discussed it but it's implied every day so..there you go.

So, Katie Angel claims 14% credit for any babies conceived while any of the partners were doing burlesque.  What's it like doing burlesque post pregnancy?  What do you think burlesque could teach your baby about life?

Hang on! Katie's claiming 14%?! I'm pretty sure that percentage of ownership equates to a couple of date nights a year ;) Burlesque post pregnancy is amazing AND busy. I remember after my 2nd (I have 3 altogether) working so hard to get back to pre-prego size. Working out day and night, dieting, watching every damn thing I ate. This time around sure I've got some lbs to lose but I'm not stressed about my body. I feel great, have as much confidence if not more when I perform.

Burlesque could teach my baby (when she's older) that diversity is the spice of life. It teaches confidence, independence, creativity, friendship, ownership and a crap-ton of things I can't think of but are important.

minniemonaWhat's been your most memorable onstage moment?

Very recently debuted a routine which was outside my comfort zone. I wasn't sure what to expect but it had great feedback. So here's to pushing the envelope, and pushing myself (thanks to a nudging from fearless leader, Katie Angel) to go beyond the familiar. It's exhilerating!
